[ARCHIVED] Puyallup City Council Appoints Mayor and Deputy Mayor

At its first meeting of 2018, the Puyallup City Council appointed John Palmer to serve as mayor for 2018 and 2019.

The City of Puyallup has a council/manager form of government. Each council member is elected by voters for a four-year term; the mayor is then selected by the council from among its members to serve a two-year term. The mayor presides at city council meetings and performs various ceremonial duties.

Mayor Palmer was initially elected to the Puyallup City Council in 2011 and re-elected to a second term in 2015. He previously served as deputy mayor in 2016 and 2017.

“I’m excited to apply the skills I’ve developed over the past ten years to help Puyallup move forward towards great things,” said Mayor Palmer. “Citizens are well-served when their elected officials work together, and I’m committed to facilitating a collaborative process and to fostering the leadership role of each member on this council.”

In addition to appointing Palmer mayor, the city council chose Tom Swanson to serve as deputy mayor for the next two years.
