[ARCHIVED] New Art Show at "City Gallery"--Free and Open to the Public

Carlson climate change flag

On Thursday, May 17th, the City of Puyallup will host a reception for artist Brett Carlson whose work is currently featured in “City Gallery” on the fifth floor of City Hall. Carlson’s pieces consist of hand-cut tin reclaimed from diverse sources and creatively arranged to form intricate, striking and provocative images.

“My Meta-tinations series presents visual images and messages utilizing recycled metal in a collage-style format,” Carlson explained. “These represent a rebirth of iconic images into new concepts and visuals.”

Carlson is a photographer, painter, book publisher and metal and sculptural artist. His art is heavily influenced by his world travels and experiences, particularly in third world countries.

Carlson’s work is colorful, arresting and thought-provoking. What it appears to be at first glance changes and deepens as the viewer pays it closer attention. By taking apart and shapeshifting the recognizable into something new, Carlson challenges us to see and thus view what we “know” in a different way.

City Gallery is free and open to the public during regular business hours. The gallery is curated by Arts Downtown, a local organization dedicated to supporting and promoting local artists with the vision of making art an essential part of the Puyallup community. City Gallery offers both established and new or emerging artists a place to showcase their work.
