On Wednesday, October 3rd*, FEMA will conduct a nationwide test of its wireless and emergency alert systems. Most communication service providers have voluntarily elected to participate in these alert message systems.
At 11:18 a.m., you will likely receive a message on your cell phone if it is turned on and within range of an active tower. The test message will have a header that reads “"Presidential Alert" and text that says:
“THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”
The wireless alert system is used to alert the public about dangerous weather, missing children, and other critical situations. Individual users cannot opt out of this test or choose to not receive alerts of this kind.
Following the mobile service message test, another test alert message will be shared via many radio, television and cable stations as well as satellite radio services and digital cable and audio broadcasting systems. The test of the radio, TV and cable systems will occur at 11:20 a.m. PST.

*The test has been delayed from September 20th due to severe weather across much of the East Coast and ongoing response efforts.
