The City of Puyallup is offering a free eight-week civics course for residents and others interested in learning about the operations of their local municipal government.

“Puyallup 101” provides insight into the workings of the city organization. Attendees will gain a strong understanding of the organizational structure and operations of city departments.

Topics covered will include:

  • Why the city balances its budget every year, and how funding decisions are made;
  • How streets and other necessary infrastructure are built and maintained;
  • Where our water comes from and how the city ensures its safety and quality;
  • How our wastewater is treated to comply with environmental regulations;
  • The duties of the City Council and how it formulates policy;
  • How the city prepares to respond to emergencies such as an earthquake or train derailment;
  • How the police department’s patrolling districts work;
  • And much more …

The objective of the course is to offer a behind-the-scenes look into how city departments operate and the services and programs they provide. It will also foster communication between the city and residents, businesses and non-profit organizations, and encourage community members to become involved in decisions that affect Puyallup’s quality of life.

The second offering of “Puyallup 101” starts on March 5th. Participants must be at least 18 and a resident or business owner in the city, or work in Puyallup. Registration is open until February 27th.
